European Commission will not consider blocking Telegram
The EU Digital Services Act allows for the possibility of a temporary suspension of Telegram in the union if the platform poses security risks to member states, but such a scenario is unlikely, European Commission spokesman Tom Renier told Izvestia.
"We can't say, 'We don't like your content and that's why we decided to block you.' We have to prove that there is a serious breach of public security in the European Union. But that is very unlikely. We are not considering blocking Telegram," he emphasized.
According to him, the European Commission is conducting its own count of Telegram users in the European Union to understand whether the service falls under the definition of a "very large online platform". So, if it turns out that their number is more than 45 million people, the service will go under the direct supervision of the European Commission.
