U.S. ambassador rules out the appearance of American military bases in Finland
There are no conditions for the appearance of US military bases on the territory of Finland at the moment. This was stated by the American ambassador to Finland, Douglas Hickey, in an interview with the Ilta-Sanomat newspaper on September 22.
"I do not see (conditions. - Ed.) the appearance of permanent U.S. military bases in Finland," - the edition quotes the words of the politician.
According to Hika, despite this, the countries will conduct joint exercises.
Earlier, on September 19, State Duma deputy Alexei Chepa said that Russia will respond to the establishment of a NATO base near the border in Finland by strengthening its defense capabilities - the deployment of air and missile defense systems (air and missile defense), increasing the number of armed forces and other ways.
On the same day it was reported that the NATO military base under construction in Finland, which will be located near the Murmansk region and the Republic of Karelia, is planned to be transferred under Swedish control. The base will house from 20 to 50 of its officers.
On August 22, the Finnish newspaper Iltalehti reported that the North Atlantic Alliance intends to deploy an armored brigade of up to 5,000 troops in the Finnish town of Mikkeli near the border with Russia. Sweden and Norway will also join.
In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that after Finland joins NATO, Russian troops and defeat systems will appear near its borders. He pointed out that the two countries used to have perfect relations and its decision to join the military bloc made no sense.
