The UN has called for an end to the bombing of Lebanon
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced an increase in humanitarian aid to Lebanon and called for an end to bombing. The relevant information was published on UNHCR's official page on the social network X (former Twitter).
"UNHCR has long been working in Lebanon to support refugees and local people. We are scaling up our basic assistance, cash support and medical care," the post reads.
The office also clarified that the bombing had to be stopped for the safety of civilians who are forced to flee.
Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out massive strikes on the facilities of the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon. According to the Lebanese side, at least 100 people were killed and more than 400 wounded. Another strike followed in Beirut. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country was acting preemptively against the threat from Hezbollah.
Hezbollah, however, indicated that the target was the Israeli Air Force's Ramat David airbase.
Prior to that, on September 17, numerous people were seriously injured in pager explosions in Beirut and southern Lebanon. The next day, various wireless devices exploded in cars and on motorcycles. These were portable radios, which were different from pagers. Lebanese authorities and Hezbollah representatives blamed Israel for the explosions.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected Israel's territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip, as well as invaded border areas in the south of the country and took hostages. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
