Divers examining the wreckage of a yacht that sank in August off the coast of Sicily have asked for increased security measures to protect the ship because of sensitive data stored in safes on board. This was reported by CNN with reference to multiple sources on Saturday, September 21.

It is specified that the yacht Bayesian may contain sensitive data related to some Western intelligence services, which may be of interest to a number of countries.

According to the TV station, British entrepreneur Michael Lynch, who was on the vessel when it crashed, was linked to British, American and other intelligence services through his various companies, including the cybersecurity company he founded, Darktrace.

"The wreck, lying on the seabed at a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet), is believed to have watertight safes containing two super-encrypted hard drives that contain highly classified information, including passwords and other sensitive data," CNN quoted an official involved in the salvage operation as saying.

Earlier, on September 4, autopsy results on the bodies of four of the seven victims of the Bayesian yacht wreck off the coast of Sicily showed that they died from lack of oxygen while trapped in the submerged vessel.

The 56-meter superyacht Bayesian sank on August 19 due to a strong storm near the coast of Sicily. According to British media, the vessel went underwater in about a minute. There were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board. 15 people managed to escape, eight of them were hospitalized. That day, British billionaire Michael Lynch had gathered guests on his yacht to celebrate the dismissal of criminal charges against him in a major fraud case.

The victims of the crash include Lynch and his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda and the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas.
