The Hungarian capital is expected to see the peak of the biggest flooding in 11 years. This was reported by Infostart on September 20.
It is noted that in 2013, the water level in the Danube, reaching 8.9 meters, was the highest in the history of measurements. According to the official data of the Ministry of Water Resources, in the next 24 hours the water level in the Danube, having reached the peak, will rise to 8.5 meters, which is 5 meters higher than normal.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at a press conference that Budapest was 100% prepared for the flood peak.
"The defense lines have been raised to 9m along the entire length of the protection zone in Budapest, which is above the highest flood level in the city. The weakest spots, Margit Island in the city center and the Battiani Square area on the Buda side, have also been successfully fortified," the Daily News Hungary quoted Orban as saying.
According to Budapest Mayor Gergel Karacsony, authorities have completed the installation of 90 percent of the temporary dikes and placed more than 500,000 sandbags.
In mid-September, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe were hit by floods. In addition to Hungary, they affected Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Romania.
Earlier, on September 19, the overflowing Danube began to flood the embankments in the center of Budapest. Over the day, the water level in the capital rose by more than 1 meter. The embankments are already flooded in most places. Thus, the water already covers the embankment in front of the Hungarian Parliament building.
September 18, Czech President Petr Pavel after visiting the most affected cities said that the restoration of infrastructure in these areas will take months or even years. It was reported that in the Czech Republic floods affected 250 settlements, of which in ten of them the level of flooding was recognized as extreme.
